3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art

The 3rd berlin biennial for contemporary art will take place from February 14th to April 18th, 2004, under the artistic direction of Ute Meta Bauer.

A broadly based international spectrum of visual, urban, cinematic, performative and sonic stagings will be presented at three venues introducing 50 international artists and art projects. The contributions will be exhibited at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin-Mitte, and on the first floor of the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin-Kreuzberg. A film programme edited by film historian Mark Nash will introduce 30 cinematic works shown at the Kino Arsenal at Potsdamer Platz, which is the third venue for this berlin biennial.

The structural changes Berlin has experienced after German reunification and 15 years after the collapse of the Berlin wall, provide the context for the 3rd berlin biennial. Therefore the artistic director has invited cultural producers with close local connections to develop spaces on five specific themes: MIGRATION by Hito Steyerl, URBAN CONDITIONS by Jesko Fezer and Axel Wieder, SONIC SCAPES by The Sonic Team, FASHIONS AND SCENES by Regina Möller and OTHER CINEMAS by Mark Nash. These audio-visual research rooms, which are described as HUBS, will be distributed among the three venues of the 3rd berlin biennial.

A Hub is a term used for the device installed as a connecting point within a computer network, from which data is distributed to the connected individual computers or for large airports that are a central axis for international air traffic. The hub rooms function as a kind of hinge, building up reciprocal and synergetic relationships with the artistic contributions invited by the artistic director. Through their neighbourhood they enable the construction of cross references and rethinking of contexts.
