An exhibition by Šejla Kamerić
11 December 2015–28 February 2016

Entitled When the heart goes bing bam boom, Šejla Kamerić’s first solo exhibition in Turkey will present a wide selection of the Bosnian artist’s works. Kamerić’s work insists that the delicate and the sublime are not pushed aside during catastrophe or hardship, but that rather they exist simultaneously, revealing a complex, psychogeographic landscape and the tenacity of the human spirit. The title of the exhibition is adopted from the lyrics of a punk rock song and evokes one of the basic dilemmas of love and life: the coexistence of exhilaration and a constant sense of insecurity. Curated by Başak Doğa Temür, the exhibition will bring together works produced through various media including video, photography, installation and sculpture, along with three new works, thus offering an overview of Kamerić’s practice that often involves her personal experiences, memories and dreams, all of which are greatly influenced by the Bosnian War.

Solo exhibitions by Şener Özmen and Bahar Yürükoğlu
23 March–15 May 2016

Şener Özmen’s exhibition at Arter marks a transition period in his artistic production. Curated by Süreyyya Evren, the exhibition will tackle the concept of “recognition,” and will expand into the artist’s individual “demands and desires” that follow the process of being recognized. Exploring the position of the artist who demands recognition for a certain social problem or identity, the exhibition will be structured around a large-scale centerpiece that alludes to a vernacular architectural wooden construction, traditionally used as an outdoor living platform and specific to the region where the artist lives. This centerpiece will open itself as a vehicle for revisiting desires and creating new memories.

Bahar Yürükoğlu’s exhibition will take as its departure point the artist’s experiences during the Arctic Circle Residency program she attended in the summer of 2015. Her current practice of experimentation with light, space and color will take on the binaries of the arctic as observed through a polar maritime voyage, tackling presence and absence, nature and civilization, retro-futuristic mining towns and advanced-technology science villages, while taking its atmospheric inspiration from melting icebergs and lenticular polar bear postcards. The exhibition will be curated by Duygu Demir.

A group exhibition curated by Selen Ansen
8 June–28 August 2016

Devised around notions of “gravity” and “gravitas,” this exhibition will bring together works that disturb perceptual habits, cultural and social edifices, and comfort zones of knowledge. Taking inspiration from post-mythical falls and downfalls, the show will focus on concepts such as “sublime” and “failure” to explore our contemporary ways of seeking grandeur while addressing the possibility for novel fields of experience.

Arter
Inaugurated in 2010 as an initiative of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Arter’s mission is to offer a sustainable infrastructure for producing and exhibiting contemporary art. Arter has been presenting solo and group exhibitions with the aim of providing a platform of visibility for artistic practices and encouraging production of contemporary artworks through the support it provides in the context of these exhibitions. Arter’s program also features publications that accompany each exhibition.

The most recent major cultural project of the Vehbi Koç Foundation is the establishment of a contemporary art museum scheduled to be opened at the end of 2017 in Istanbul’s Dolapdere district, close to the city centre. Conceptualised as a multidisciplinary cultural and educational hub, the museum will house the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection as well as feature temporary exhibitions and associated events throughout the year, furthering Arter’s ongoing program.
