Nottingham Contemporary is seeking to appoint a new Director to succeed Alex Farquharson, who is leaving after eight years at the helm, to take up the post of Director, Tate Britain.

Nottingham Contemporary, which opened in November 2009 in an award-winning 3,000-square-metre building designed by Caruso St. John, has acquired an outstanding national and international reputation for its artistic and educational programmes. Its exhibitions have been seen by well over a million visitors, and it has increased the audience for contemporary visual arts in Nottingham and the wider area, deepened engagement, and generated many millions of pounds for the local economy.

Building on this success, the new Director will take on this important role with the brief to lead the organisation into its next significant chapter. Responsible for further developing and articulating the artistic vision for Nottingham Contemporary, they will devise and deliver artistic programmes of contemporary art that are distinctive, original, and world-class while also ensuring long-term sustainability and prosperity for the organisation.

A challenging role, carrying responsibility for managing key stakeholder and funding relationships with a broad range of individuals and organisations including Arts Council England, Nottingham City Council, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham, candidates for this role will be artistic leaders with a reputation for curatorial excellence who have the ability to provide the inspirational leadership that the organisation expects. A good networker with excellent relations with artists, curators, gallerists, lenders, and educators, the candidate will have the confidence and ambition to make a strong organisation excel, developing it for the longer-term in an external environment of considerable change, ensuring that Nottingham and the East Midlands continues to benefit from the impact of this outstanding international centre for contemporary art.
