apexart has been publishing relevant books since 2006. Our latest title, Life Between Borders: The Nomadic Life of Curators and Artists, considers the consequences of frequent relocation and travel in the art world.

As arts professionals and artists relocate more often and on a larger, global scale, it is no wonder that identity and satisfaction are bound up with the consequences of this mobility. We move so readily and freely around the world that it has become normal practice to travel to new countries for a job, living somewhere temporarily, with the expectation that we will readily adapt. How do we reconcile our own cultural identity and these issues as our exposure to and immersion into other cultures increases?

Ten new essays by a diverse group of international art professionals consider the issue of nomadism in the arts. The authors are:

Melissa Chiu, Museum Director and Curator for Contemporary Asian and Asian-American art at the Asia Society, NYC
Gitanjali Dang, independent curator and critic, Mumbai
Jimmie Durham, artist and writer, Berlin
Mahita El Bacha Urieta, curator and public policy worker, Abu Dhabi
Mekbib Gemeda, Director of the Center for the Health of the African Diaspora at NYU School of Medicine, NYC
Pascal Gielen, Professor of sociology of art at the University of Groningen, Netherlands
Lamia Joriege, visual artist and writer, Beirut
Sebastien Sanz de Santamaria, Director Residency Unlimited, NYC
Niels Van Tomme, Curator, researcher, and art critic, NYC
Yannis Ziogas, artist and author, Athens and Florina, Greece

apexart publications are currently in use in many university classrooms around the world. Previous apexart publications include Playing by the Rules: Alternative Thinking/Alternative Spaces (2010), on the development of alternative spaces around the world and their role in the 21st century; Cautionary Tales: Critical Curating (2007), on the evolution and practice of the curator; and On Cultural Influence (2006), a collection of papers about international culture delivered at apexart conferences. Our next title will address residency programs and what their effect is.
