Richard Artschwager!
February 20–May 11, 2014
NMNM – Villa Paloma

Richard Artschwager! features over 135 works spanning six decades, including sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, and prints. Often associated with Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, his work never fit neatly into any of these categories. His artistic practice consistently explored questions regarding his own visual and physical engagement with the world; his objects straddle the line between illusion and reality.

The exhibition reveals the artist’s prescience in his career-long commitment to exploring the profound effect photography and technology have had in transforming our engagement with the world. His work has responded to and challenged how these media—and our experience of things as images rather than as things in themselves—have shifted human experience from being rooted in primary physical experience to a knowledge mediated by secondary sources such as newspapers, television, and the internet.

The exhibition is organized by the Whitney Museum American Art in association with the Yale University Art Gallery, and curated by Jennifer Gross, Seymour H. Knox, Jr. Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, Yale University Art Gallery.

Gilbert & George
June 14–November 2, 2014
NMNM – Villa Paloma

“2 people and 1 artist.” Gilbert and George “the living sculpture” are the subject of a retrospective built within a single private collection of unbelievable quality and number of works that range through four decades of a “life dedicated to art, shared thoughts, social documents,” and rarely seen early drawings. Gilbert & George themselves chose the artworks, designed the exhibition and supervised the concept of the entire show.

Portraits d’Intérieurs
July 10–October 19, 2014
NMNM – Villa Sauber

Portraits d’intérieurs offers an immersion in six three-dimensional installations suggesting real or fictional places, transposed in Villa Sauber’s exhibition spaces.

Both Jean Cocteau’s (imaginary) bedroom designed by Marc-Camille Chaimowicz, and Guerlain’s first beauty institute’s antechamber—decorated by Christian Bérard in 1939 and duplicated by Nick Mauss—are reactivated by the artists through site-specific interventions while integrating a selection of works from the NMNM’s collection.

Structured around the notions of replica, quotation and projection, the exhibition also questions our perception of the scenery and scenic design. Video installations by Danika Dakic and Brice Dellsperger (amongst others) show other enclosed spaces while sowing doubt on the relation between the spectator and the work and its environment.
