The exhibition Future Perfect. The Future As It Will Have Been brings together works by sixteen artists who address concepts of the future and speculations about the impending course of history. The title of the exhibition refers to a grammatical tense that expresses the completion of an action in the future—something will have been. Future perfect is a preview in the past and thus speculation. It refers to an anticipation of the future, an assumption that it will have actually been occurred as expected. This is the starting point for the exhibition Future Perfect, which poses questions such as: Can we communicate with one another given the assumption of a future perfect? Today, however, the future is manifested an increasingly critical concept. Given the extent of today’s digital and mobile acceleration, it is almost impossible to anticipate even the near future. What positions are artists adopting in their use of material, form, narrative and imagination? How do they reconsider the past? Where do they see potential for action?
Future Perfect is the latest touring exhibition put on by ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen). It will have its premiere at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, and will subsequently be shown on several continents. The exhibition includes key works from sixteen artists living in Germany and working in media ranging from film to photography, sculpture, objects, painting, and collage.
