Together with a special exhibition Nostalgia Is An Extended Feedback in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Nam June Paik’s birth in 2012, the Nam June Paik Art Center is hosting a one-day symposium entitled Man-Machine Duet for Life. The fifth of the annual symposium series Gift of Nam June Paik, this symposium will deal with the themes of cybernetics which influenced Paik to a great extent in the mid-20th century. Cybernetics is a theory of system and information in a narrow sense, and a philosophy of life and knowledge linking together man, machine and nature in a broad sense. Cybernetics was a great source of inspiration for Paik who sought to couple technology and humans, technology and nature, and technology and art. Paik defines cybernetics as “the science of pure relations, or relationship itself” and “the exploitation of boundary regions between and across various existing sciences.” Through the prism of Paik’s art in relation to cybernetics, this symposium will be looking specifically into challenging conservation of media art and different disciplinary takes on “being cybernetic” in terms of changing ways of man and machine sharing life.
