Artists work in museums: histories, interventions and subjectivity

Join the V&A as we bring together artists, curators, historians and museum professionals to explore the history and impact of artists working in museums. It will examine the diverse, often hidden ways museums and galleries function as environments of cultural and identity production. Speakers include Charles Saumerez-Smith, Susanna Avery-Quash, Calum Storrie, James Putnam, Martha Flemming, Zandra Ahl, Beatrice Von Bismarck, Teresa Gleadowe, Sally Tallant.

In collaboration with CCW Graduate School, University of the Arts London and the Museums and Galleries History Group.

Hidden in Plain Sight: The Art of Hollywood Costume
Friday 9 November, 10–17.15
Join international costume designers and Hollywood Costume curator Professor Deborah Nadoolman Landis to explore the unique design of the exhibition, its conception and the important role UK art schools have played in creating Oscar-nominated designers. Speakers include Cinémathèque Française, Casson Mann and Julian Scott.

Sustaining Identity III

Join acclaimed international architects whose work resists homogenisation by prioritising place, the senses and memory. Speakers include 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate, Wang Shu, 2012 Global Holcim Award winner, Francis Kéré and renowned architectural theorist Juhani Pallasmaa, who has curated the event with Paul Brislin of Arup Associates.

In collaboration with Architectural Design (AD) and Arup Associates.

Writing Materials: Women of Letters from Enlightenment to Modernity
Friday 30 November, 10–17.45
From salons to closets and glamour to grammar, explore the tools and environments of women’s writing in the 18th & 19th centuries and create new connections between texts and material objects. Speakers Include: Peter Stallybrass, Marcia Pointon, Dena Goodman, Elizabeth Eger and Angela McShane.

In collaboration with King’s College London and the Elizabeth Montagu Letters Project (an AHRC funded research network). With funding from the Paul Mellon Foundation.
