curated by_vienna is a programme that commissions collaborative projects between Vienna’s leading contemporary art galleries and internationally renowned curators. Now in its fourth year, curated by_vienna 2012 will be held in 22 galleries throughout the city, opening on September 20 and running until October 25.

Under the title art or life: aesthetics and biopolitics, this year’s project conceived by Eva Maria Stadler in cooperation with the galleries explores the interconnections between work, economy, knowledge and politics. 25 curators have been invited to develop special exhibitions for the participating galleries.

The focal point of curated by_vienna is the mutual commitment of galleries to dedicate their efforts to a specific topic or explorative question for a set limit of time, and to subject their own work to outside reflection. The exchange taking place among international curators and the contacts made to various artists, museums, and art institutions all have a lasting impact. They create a network that today more than ever proves crucial for contemporary art. In hosting this project, Vienna occupies a special position amidst manifold initiatives, all of which strive to devote as much attention as possible to contemporary art.
