The 6th issue of frieze d/e has a special focus on painting.

‘You want to make a painting, and you do it with your hands … you create a gesture. Maybe many of them, maybe few. But gesture is the inevitable mechanics of making an art object.’ Frank Stella

Painting Space: Mark Prince considers Stella‘s concept of ‘working space’ by asking: ‘Is the space of painting made by abstraction, illusion or the sculptural qualities of the canvas?’ In a companion piece Prince interviews Stella and artist Monika Baer.

dOCUMENTA (13): Susanne von Falkenhausen and frieze d/e editor Jennifer Allen contribute two extensive reviews.

Also featured in issue 6: Luca Cerizza tests the appropriation of mass media and popular culture in the works of Phil Collins; Thibaut de Ruyter takes a closer look at the photographs of Seiichi Furuya; and Quinn Latimer examines Latifa Echakhch‘s strategies to turn everyday objects into abstractions through destruction and displacement.

In our regular columns: Jan Verwoert asks if the art world is too exclusive; Max Glauner takes a closer look at the redevelopment of Zurich’s hotspot for contemporary art, the Löwenbräu Complex; and Jörg Heiser speaks to Eduard Pomeranz about exhibiting his collection at Vienna’s Jewish Museum. And, in our Music section, Jan Kedves traces the rise of a queer hip hop genre: New Orleans Sissy Bounce.

Plus, Bert Rebhandl introduces the work of Philip Scheffner, whose films represent a new wave of German political documentary; and Anselm Reyle recalls his collaboration with the late Franz West whilst Jörg Heiser looks back at the artist’s career.

As part of our regular series ‘In a Word’, artist Tue Greenfort and anthropologist Stefan Helmreich explore the changing notion of the concept of ‘species’.

For our regular column ‘Das Ding’, artist Judith Hopf chooses a special object of significance from her working and living environment.

With 19 reviews, including: Jeff Koons at Fondation Beyeler, Basel, Schirn Kunsthalle & Liebieghaus, Frankfurt; Tino Sehgal at Tate Modern, London; Bruno Gironcoli at Musée d’art modern et contemporain, Geneva; Michele Di Menna at Galerie Kamm, Berlin; and Hans Schabus at Kerstin Engholm Galerie, Vienna. As well as exhibitions from: Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Innsbruck, Leipzig, Munich, Neuss, Obergrafschaft Bentheim, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich.
