The Armory Show, one of the most important annual art events in New York City and a leading international contemporary and modern art fair, is now accepting applications for the 2013 edition.
Celebrating its fifteenth year and paying homage to the 100th anniversary of its namesake, the legendary 1913 Amory Show International Exhibition of Modern Art, The Armory Show 2013 will take place from Thursday, March 7 through Sunday, March 10, 2013 with an invitation-only preview day on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. The 2013 edition will feature an international roster of leading galleries; the acclaimed Armory Show VIP program; an exclusive opening night party at The Museum of Modern Art; the curated Open Forum speaker series; Armory Film, a series featuring a selection of contemporary film and video work; Armory Performance; and Armory Arts Week in partnership with New York’s museums and cultural institutions. The 2013 Armory Show will be joined in March by the ADAA’s The Art Show, in addition to Volta NY, the fourth edition of The Independent, Moving Image, and Scope, which will be held on the same dates as The Armory Show during Armory Arts Week.
“The fifteenth edition will build on the overwhelming success of this past year, heralded as an important art world event and an engaging center for the artistic community of our great city,” said Armory Show Founding Director Paul Morris. “We welcome the most exciting international galleries to participate in the 2013 fair and look forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show.”
More than 60,000 visitors from around the world attended the fourteenth edition of The Armory Show in 2012 making it one of the most successful in terms of attendance and sales in the fair’s history. A key component of this success was the redesigned layout of the piers, which was greeted enthusiastically by both exhibiting dealers and visiting collectors. Participants in The Armory Show 2012 represented a thoughtful, curated mix of leading international dealers, who showed work that accentuated the fair’s mission of innovation and discovery. The Armory Show – Contemporary on Pier 94 featured contemporary art from 157 exhibitors representing 30 countries; The Armory Show – Modern on Pier 92, dedicated to dealers specializing in historically significant modern art, presented 71 exhibitors representing nine countries. The Armory Show’s 2012 Commissioned Artist was Theaster Gates, whose work will be featured in dOCUMENTA (13) opening this June.
History of The Armory Show
Founded in 1994 by dealers Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks, and Paul Morris as the Gramercy International Art Fair, The Armory Show acquired its current title in 1999 following the fair’s migration to the 69th Regiment Armory on Lexington Avenue. The name was an homage to the legendary 1913 exhibition of the same name that also took place in this building and famously showcased works by avant-garde European artists never previously seen on American soil side-by-side with their American counterparts. The original Armory Show of 1913 is widely credited for introducing European Modernism to America, and its eclectic and unorthodox mix of genres, juxtaposing Vincent van Gogh alongside Marcel Duchamp and Edward Hopper, has been a source of inspiration for ensuing decades and continues to influence artists today—more than 99 years later. As both a leading international art fair and a New York institution, The Armory Show continues to evolve as a site for discovery and for supporting the great contemporary and modern galleries and artists of our time.
