Since the middle of December, Museum Ludwig has been showing Kasper König’s last programmatic exhibition in Cologne: Before the Law brings together sculptures from the post-war era with spaces created by contemporary artists. The film scholar and professor of visual theory at the Bauhaus University Weimar, Volker Pantenburg, together with Berlin film journalist, author and editor Michael Baute have compiled a film programme for the exhibition.

The film series presents examples of how cinema has conceived of the relationship between discrete bodies left to their own resources, and abstract, often all-powerful authorities. We find two historical constellations here: when Modernism flourished during the late 1950s and 1960s, existential questions came to be translated into severe, sculptural-looking tableaux. The individual was faced with an abstract, mostly unnamed and inexplicable power. By contrast, a notable return to the body and places can be observed in the last two decades, quite possibly as an antidote to the abstract, allegorical approaches of Modernism. Questions about existence are no longer phrased in anthropological terms or as questions of belief, but as concrete models of life and survival.
