ÍNDEX is a new biannual publication of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) on artistic research, thought and education. The journal aims to generate a new bibliography that participates in the renewal of culture and to become a test bed for the construction of a new critical language that encourages thinking from and through art.

ÍNDEX is divided into the following sections:
• Zoom
How is it possible to put together another narrative of art? Zoom is a space for new intellectual and bibliographic points of reference.
• Display
How are exhibitions brought about? What does their research involve? This section attempts to make visible the processes by which exhibitions are conceived and defined.
• Mediterraneans
A space for dialogue on the Near East, Europe and North Africa. Different voices offer new formulations regarding culture, art, religion, education and the common future of the societies in the Mediterranean region.
• Artistic research
Why and how do I do what I do? Artists talk about their projects in the first person.
• Academy
What is the role of education? How are critical visions constructed? Academy deals with the relationship between art and the human sciences, as well as critical-social intervention both within the museum and beyond.

The first issue of ÍNDEX focuses on the question of artistic research, which it places at the heart of the Museum’s current concerns. To this aim this issue features collaborations by the philosopher Christoph Menke, the historian and curator Piotr Piotrowski, the researcher Elizabeth Suzanne Kassab, the artists Julie Ault and Natascha Sadr Haghighian, the philosopher and director of MACBA’s Independent Study Programme Xavier Antich, and the art historian Johanna Burton. The journal also includes texts by Bartomeu Marí, director of MACBA, and Chus Martínez, editor of the magazine.

The next issue of ÍNDEX will feature collaborations by Chus Martínez, the philosophers José Luis Pardo and Reza Negarestani, the independent curator Natasa Ilic, the artists collective The Otolith Group and the activist and writer Franco Berardi.

ÍNDEX will come out every May and October. Issue 0 of the journal is already available online at www.macba.cat/index. To receive it by post please write to mailing@macba.cat
