Biennale never stops!

The fourteenth International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara, titled Postmonument, continues with a big success, and will be enriched at the end of summer by an important section dedicated to workshops and performances.

To challenge the theme of the exhibition – that process of de-monumentalization which has freed sculpture from any celebratory, encomiastic functions – have been called four artists: Vanessa Beecroft, Nevin Aladag, Grzegorz Kowalski and Zorka Wollny. The aim: to show how, having abandoned its pedestal, the monument has become environment, experienced space and gesture, obtaining a more expanded and extemporary dimension of sculpture, in which the third dimension turns the place into experience and ephemeral time boldly modifies any presumptions of eternity.

From the interaction between traditional media and new technologies, to the use of the body and the rediscovery of sounds and noises, no aspect of the performative language is neglected. Therefore on 4th September the marble of the ancient Studi Nicoli will encounter the live sensuality of Vanessa Beecroft‘s models, on 12th September a racing car will go against its competitive vocation by slowly crossing the city of the quarries for the performance by Nevin Aladag, while on 2ndOctober Zorka Wollny will once again bring to life, amidst the ruins of the former Corsi-Nicolai laboratory, the sounds which inhabited it until last century (scalpels, files, hammers, etc.). The mid-September workshop held by Grzegorz Kowalski, will deal with the theme of how the encounter between an ephemeral mean – the video camera – and an instrument of eternity – sculpture – can respond to the new needs of monumentality.

Dates and times:
4th September, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Studi Nicoli, Piazza XXVII Aprile 8/E: VBmarmi.carrara (special project), performance by Vanessa Beecroft.

12th September 2010, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., streets of Carrara: Rally, performance by Nevin Aladag.

13th -18th September, Istituto del Marmo Pietro Tacca and other venues: Does the sculptor need a camera? Camera as a tool to study time-space. Workshop with Grzegorz Kowalski. Expiry date for applications, 25th August. The course is organized by the XIVth International Sculpture Biennale of Carrara in collaboration with Statuaria Arte, the Istituto del Marmo Pietro Tacca and AIG.

2nd October, former Corsi-Nicolai laboratory, Viale Potrignano 22/d: Sonate of erosion, performance by Zorka Wollny in collaboration with Anna Szwajgıer.

The Biennale will also be present at the Con_vivere Festival, which will be held in Carrara from 10th to 12th September 2010, with the discussion on Saturday 11th September at 5.30 p.m. between Hedwig Fijen, Adriana Polveroni and Angela Vettese, on the theme Europe, art and economy.
