The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is an international research centre and museum founded by Phyllis Lambert in 1979 on the conviction that architecture is a public concern.

Based on its extensive Collection, exhibitions, programs, and research opportunities, the CCA is a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on architecture, its history, theory, practice, and role in society today.

Appointed by the Executive Director and Chief Curator, and reporting to him, the Associate Director, Collection possesses a thorough understanding of the key institutional aspects of the CCA and provides scholarly and strategic leadership to the curatorial and managerial activities of the CCA Collection Division, in order to continuously develop and provide access to the CCA’s Collection as a catalyst for original inquiry.

The Associate Director works with the Executive Director and Chief Curator and with senior management to define institution-wide policies, goals and priorities, and to develop relations with individuals, institutions and organizations that can support or partner the CCA in its mission.

Based on the CCA’s vision, in consultation and collaboration with the Executive Director and Chief Curator, with the Associate Director, Programs, and with the Associate Director, Study Centre, the Associate Director, Collection helps to develop programs based on the collection that stimulate and broaden participation, and that explore key aspects of architecture and contemporary issues affecting the built environment.

Major Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Curator, the Associate Director, Collection has direct responsibility for all activities related to developing, managing and using the Collection – including acquisitions, cataloguing, conservation, loans, dissemination and research. She/he is responsible for developing strategies and priorities for all areas of her/his involvement, and for managing the Collection budget and staff. She/he will also work in close collaboration with the Associate Director, Development and with curators in identifying and nurturing potential donors who support the CCA Collection and contribute to the CCA’s vision.

Collection Development:
Develops policy proposals, priorities and working methods that meet the needs and objectives of the CCA and of the research communities it serves; In close consultation with the Executive Director and Chief Curator and the Acquisitions Committee, develops acquisition policies and priorities, and recommends material for acquisition; Develops and implements a policy of conservation and of digital collecting; Guides the curatorial staff in developing and maintaining relations with vendors and donors of materials and in negotiating major contracts for acquisition; In collaboration with Development coordinates collection fundraising and develops, cultivates and maintains relations with donors.

Collection Research, Documentation and Management:
Develops policy proposals, priorities, working methods and procedures for collection management, collection service and conservation; Ensures that the Collection Division staff contribute to CCA curatorial and research aspects; Works with the academic, architectural and related disciplines to encourage external research in and around the subject matter of the CCA Collection; Oversees policies, management and implementation of the CCA’s institutional archive.

Collaboration with Research, Exhibitions, Publication and Programs:
Collaborates with the Executive Director and Chief Curator, Associate Director, Programs and senior management to develop exhibitions, publications and outreach programs that advance the research agenda of the CCA and access to the Collection; Contributes to the editorial content of the CCA website; Contributes to the development of colloquia, conferences and other programs designed to extend ideas surrounding the Collection.

Division Management:
Is responsible for the budget of the Collection Division; As one of the senior executives of the CCA, contributes to long-term budget planning, annual budget construction and periodic review of operational budgets; With the Executive Director and Chief Curator and the Acquisitions Committee, plans and manages the acquisition budget and special acquisition funds.

We expect the candidate to have an advanced degree or equivalent in art or architectural history, or a related field; to have a thorough knowledge of the field, an imaginative and original approach to it and a record of scholarly publications; to have a proven competence of methods in acquisition, management, interpretation, research and use of museum collections; to have a record of leadership and collaboration; to have a previous experience in managing staff and developing projects; to have ability to work in English and French with advanced writing skills in one of them.
