Devised by Ruth Ewan, Dreadnoughts is a series of guided walking tours around East London, each walk taking its starting point from an historical struggle in the local area. The walks will be led by three invited specialists – historian and educationalist David Rosenberg, Anna Minton, author of Ground Control: Fear and happiness in the Twenty-First Century City and feminist historian Sheila Rowbotham – and will be accompanied by a series of ephemeral art works, including badges and short live works, marking the spread of information along the way.
Ruth Ewan (born Aberdeen, 1980) is based in London. Recent group exhibitions include Art Sheffield (2010), Frieze Projects (2009), Altermodern: Tate Triennial (2009) and Younger Than Jesus (2009) New Museum, New York and she has produced solo projects with ICA, London (2008) and Artangel Interaction, London (2007).
Dreadnoughts is part of A Sense of Place, Chisenhale Gallery’s flagship exchange programme for three secondary schools in Tower Hamlets and artists with specific interests in collectivism, collaboration and direct engagement with social and cultural contexts. Chisenhale Gallery has received an investment from Deutsche Bank and Arts & Business to develop their education programme. The Arts & Business Investment Programme is funded by Arts Council England.

Linder: The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of FAME
Saturday 10 July, 10am – 11pm
Chisenhale Gallery presents, The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of FAME, a major new thirteen-hour performance event by artist and musician Linder in collaboration with musician Stuart McCallum (of The Cinematic Orchestra), fashion designer Richard Nicoll (also Creative Director, Cerruti) and dancers and musicians from varied traditions and disciplines.
The Darktown Cakewalk is an epic invocation of glamour and fantastical pageantry. Witch trials and beauty queens, ragtime and Euro Pop merge to enfold the viewer in a secret history of prejudice and dissent. The audience will intermingle with the performers and will be able to come and go over the 13 hours as they wish.

Linder was born in Liverpool in 1954 and is based in Haysham, Lancashire. Over the last three decades Linder has had a prolific output across myriad forms. Part of the late 1970s and early 1980s Manchester punk and post punk scenes, she is well known for her photomontages, such as her artwork on the cover of the 1977 Buzzcocks single Orgasm Addict and recent performances based on a range of collaged material and ideas. Recent exhibitions and performances include Tate St Ives (2009), Kolnischer Kunstverein, Cologne (2009), Baltic, Gateshead (2007) and PS1/Museum of Modern Art, New York (2007).
The Darktown Cakewalk is produced in collaboration with Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow and supported by Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2010, Outset Contemporary Art Fund, Stuart Shave / Modern Art and Shane Akeroyd.

For the Summer Chisenhale Gallery hosts 27 Senses, a group exhibition curated by Lina Dzuverovic and produced by Electra arriving at Chisenhale Gallery from the Norwegian fjords and based around the participating artists’ investigation into a forgotten moment in the life of seminal artist Kurt Schwitters.
Emerging out of a research trip in 2007 to the Schwitters Hütte – a small hut on the remote island of Hjertøya that Schwitters inhabited and transformed during his exile from Germany in the 1930s – the project developed in close dialogue with a unique site. The artists involved in the project’s first chapter will make a similar transition and continue their dialogue with Schwitters, recontextualising works created in response to their visit to the Schwitters Hütte as well as presenting new projects.
Electra is a London based contemporary art agency which specialises in curating, commissioning and producing ambitious cross-disciplinary projects by artists working across sound, moving image, performance and the visual arts.
