de Appel arts centre has recently opened its new exhibition space – de Appel Boys’ School – in the centre of Amsterdam with the Group Exhibition “For the blind man in the dark room looking for the black cat that isn’t there”. Next to presenting exhibitions, performances and side-events as an arts centre de Appel continues to function as a centre for curatorial studies which equally presents a number of public activities. In 2010 this e.g. entails the launch of a new publication, the screening of a documentary realized by coordinator Danila Cahen and the opening of the final project by the participants in the Curatorial Programme 2009/2010.

“Friendly Enemies”

A Documentary by Danila Cahen
Location: de Ateliers, Stadhouderskade 86

“Friendly Enemies” is a film about the relationship between artist and curator. It shows the hectic process of making a large international group exhibition like the 9th Istanbul Biennial in 2005, against the background of the historical development of exhibition making. Through archive material and new interviews with art professionals around the world, an art historical narrative – looking back at important moments, figures and exhibitions in the history of exhibition making – is being enfolded.

With contributions by: Saskia Bos, Ann Demeester, Charles Esche, Alex Farquharson, Vasif Kortun, Gerardo Mosquera, Harald Szeemann and artists Hüseyin Alptekin, Yael Bartana, Pavel Büchler, Daniel Buren, Ger van Elk, Serkan Özkaya, Dan Perjovschi a.o.

“You Talkin’ to Me? Why are Artists and Curators Turning to Education?”

Book Launch
Location: VU University, De Boelelaan 1105

Following the critically acclaimed reader “Curating Subjects” (2007) Open Editions and de Appel arts centre (2007) publish the companian volume: “Curating and the Educational Turn”. Ed. by Paul O’Neill & Mick Wilson

In recent years there has been increased debate about the incorporation of pedagogy into art and curatorial practice –what has been termed ‘the educational turn’. In this publication artists, curators, critics and academics respond to this widely recognised sense of art’s paradigmatic re-orientation towards the educational.

“I’m Not Here. An Exhibition Without Francis Alÿs”

Group Exhibition
Curated by de Appel Curatorial Programme 09/10
Location: de Appel Boys’ School, Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 59

The participants of de Appel Curatorial Programme ’09/’10 present the project “I’m Not Here. An Exhibition Without Francis Alÿs”. The title is inspired by “I’m Not There” (2007) a biographical film directed by Todd Haynes about the iconic American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Six actors depict different facets of Dylan’s life and his public persona while Dylan himself is absent from the film. In reference to this, “I’m Not Here. An Exhibition Without Francis Alÿs” is a solo exhibition that takes the form of a group exhibition in which works by the contributing artists evoke the atmosphere of the work of an absent Francis Alÿs. It invites the audience to think about Alÿs and challenge the privileging of presence over absence.

Participating artists: Mounira Al Solh (LB/NL), Vaast Colson (BE), Luisa Cunha (PT), Grier Edmundson (USA/UK), André Guedes (PT), Gustav Metzger (UK), Tatiana Mesa (CU), Roman Ondak (SK), Pak Sheung Chuen (HK/CN), Wilfredo Prieto (CU), Ariel Schlesinger (IL), David Sherry (UK)
