An innovative exhibition project, to take place in Vienna from May 6 through June 6, 2009, will explore novel ways of co-operation between curators and galleries. curated by_vienna 09 links 18 Viennese contemporary art galleries with international curators of high distinction. The participating galleries have formed four groups of 4-5 galleries each, and each group invites a curator of its choice. The following curators have been selected: Dan Cameron & María de Corral, Matthew Higgs, Gianni Jetzer and Jérôme Sans. The shows will take place within the exhibition spaces of the galleries constituting each group, which will be treated as a single exhibition zone.

curated by_vienna 09 encourages systematic cooperation between galleries and curators. It allows visitors to compare the artworks selected as well as the strategies adopted by the four groups of galleries and their respective curators and thereby gain valuable insight into curatorial practices.

curated by_vienna 09 is coordinated and funded by “departure,” Vienna’s point of contact and funding organization in the field of creative industries including visual arts and the art market.

As a multicultural metropolis at the crossroads between Europe’s North and South, between East and West, between tradition and avant-garde, Vienna boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene. In addition to its world-class museums and non-profit art institutions, there are an amazing number of first-rate galleries. “Vienna is a stimulating place for innovative approaches in cultural production,” says Christoph Thun-Hohenstein, Managing Director of departure (and Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York 1999-2007), “and we would like to encourage further initiatives in this regard.”

The opening of curated by_vienna 09 takes place on May 8, 2009 and coincides with VIENNAFAIR 2009. The curated by_vienna 09 exhibitions will be on view from May 6 through June 6 and will be accompanied by a series of panel discussions to be held at the departure lounge of VIENNAFAIR.
