Christian Marclay to Receive Larry Aldrich Award

The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is pleased to announce the selection of Christian Marclay as the fifteenth recipient of the Museum’s Larry Aldrich Award.

The award honors an American artist whose work has had a significant impact on contemporary visual culture during recent years. The recipient is selected by an independent jury of artists, collectors, critics, curators, and gallerists.

Christian Marclay was born in 1955 in San Rafael, California, and grew up in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studied at the Ecole Supérieure d’Art Visuel. In 1977, he moved to Boston and attended the Massachusetts College of Art, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In 1978, he spent a term at Cooper Union, New York, where he studied with Hans Haacke as an exchange student. Marclay currently lives and works in New York City and is represented by Paula Cooper Gallery.

Marclay’s silkscreen Double Doors (The Electric Chair) was seen at The Aldrich in Voice & Void: 2006 Hall Curatorial Fellowship Exhibition, and his video installation Guitar Drag was featured in Best of the Season: Selected Highlights from the 2000-01 Manhattan Exhibition Season. He will create a project at The Aldrich in connection with the award in 2011.

Special thanks to Charlotte and Bill Ford.

The Award: The Museum is grateful to Larry Aldrich for his generosity and foresight in establishing and funding the Award. Previous recipients include: Elizabeth Peyton, 2006; Kara Walker, 2005; Catherine Opie, 2004; David Hammons, 2003; Fred Wilson, 2002; Mark Dion, 2001; Doug Aitken, 2000; Janine Antoni, 1999; Ann Hamilton, 1998; Charles Ray, 1997; Robert Gober, 1996; Bruce Nauman, 1995; Cindy Sherman, 1994; and Elizabeth Murray, 1993.

The Museum: The Aldrich is one of the few non-collecting contemporary art museums in the United States. Founded on Ridgefield’s historic Main Street in 1964, the Museum enjoys the curatorial independence of an alternative space while maintaining the registrarial and art-handling standards of a national institution. Exhibitions feature work by emerging and mid-career artists, and education programs help adults and children to connect to today’s world through contemporary art. The Museum is located at 258 Main Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877. All exhibitions and programs are handicapped accessible. Free on-site parking. Regular Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm. For more information call 203.438.4519.
