Ritornell (refrain) refers to the recurrence of a motif, an instrumental phrase played at the beginning, end or middle of a piece in concerto grosso; the refrain. In this exhibition, Ritornell is a metaphor representing nine artistic works in which the recurrence of motifs and reiteration play a part. The motifs themselves originate from various discourses, from history and the present day, and from everyday life as well as politics. In their creative adaptation it seems that something is set in motion, a “ritornell” via which these motifs are transposed using poetic, sometimes ironic means from the historical into the present day, and so made productive in terms of current experience.

Šejla Kamerić
22 November 2008 – 25 January 2009

The exhibition of works by Bosnian artist Šejla Kamerić is dealing with history, with distant memories from the past. On the one hand, Kamerić shows a fictive film scenario of her family history, and on the other hand, photographic works in which she traces indications of a violent past − on the surface of a wall, or using the example of an historical colour photograph from the Warsaw ghetto.

Šejla Kamerić was born in Sarajevo in 1976. She lives and works in Sarajevo and Berlin.

Documentation 1999-2008

Thursday, 11 December 2008, 8 pm

This publication offers a comprehensive survey of the programme of the Galerie im Taxispalais from 1998-2008. Under Silvia Eiblmayr’s direction the gallery has pursued various international objectives – in thematic exhibitions relevant to art and society, and in individual exhibitions which often presented artists for the first time on a comprehensive scale. The publication provides a succinct synopsis of all those exhibitions, as well as the numerous accompanying lectures, symposia, performances and concerts. Text contributions by Christiane Erharter, Nataša Ilić, Georg Schöllhammer and Romana Schuler trace the gallery’s conceptual emphases, examining their local and international references.
