PARSONS LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR DEAN OF MEDIA

www.parsons.newschool.edu

Parsons The New School for Design has announced that it has launched a search for a first-ever Dean of Media. The Dean of Media will provide academic and administrative leadership for programs that encompass a diverse range of visual art and design practices at Parsons, including BFA programs in design and technology, communication design, photography, fine art, illustration, and an AAS program in graphic design, as well as MFA programs in design and technology, photography and fine art.

“Parsons is currently undergoing one of the most ambitious and exciting periods of growth in our long history,” said Parsons Dean Tim Marshall. “This growth is happening on a variety of levels: the creation of a broader, more flexible curriculum; the development of new innovative programs; the expansion of facilities; and an evolving academic mission that addresses the growing influence of art and design in today’s
global world.”

As part of this development, Parsons is organizing its academic departments into five, thematic schools that better facilitate an interdisciplinary approach and provide a more rational and consistent support structure for faculty and students. In addition to Media, these schools encompass Materials (architecture, interior design, lighting design and product design), Fashion, Methods (foundation, integrated design, design and management, and proposed graduate programs in sustainability, urbanism and entrepreneurship), and Theory (art and design studies). This new structure will launch in the 2008-09 academic year.

In addition to overseeing the development and administration of the degree programs mentioned above, the Dean of Media will spearhead the development of a range of new undergraduate and graduate programs in this area. This includes programs that will further explore gaming, social media and networking, animation, multi-platform publishing, visual narratives, interaction design, and broadcast design.
