Please join Grey Art Gallery director Lynn Gumpert on February 2 and March 2, 2005, for the Grey’s “First Wednesday Salons,” informal gatherings held from 6 to 8 pm on the first Wednesday of each month that the gallery is open to the public.
CURRENTLY ON VIEW:
Mapping Sitting: On Portraiture and Photography, A Project by Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari – Arab Image Foundation
Venturing into uncharted territory, Mapping Sitting explores 20th-century portrait photography. Conceived by two contemporary artists, Walid Raad and Akram Zaatari, the mixed-media exhibition comprises four sections investigating how the portrait functioned in the Arab world not only to picture individuals and groups, but also as commodity, luxury item, and adornment.
Multiple Identities: Portraits from the New York University Art Collection
Conceived as a complement to the concurrent Mapping Sitting, Multiple Identities explores the art of the portrait through selected works from the New York University Art Collection. Featuring over 30 works spanning four centuries, with artists ranging from New York to Tehran, Multiple Identities represents a rich cross-section of styles and cultures that charts many of the significant developments within portraiture while also challenging our understanding of them.
Exhibitions on view: January 11 – April 2, 2005
