Surveying an international tendency in video art that has become increasingly significant over the past decade, IRREDUCIBLE brings together works that are structured around a particular situation, event or performance. Combining narrative economy with quasi-documentary approaches, many of the participating artists reinterpret the process-oriented concerns of performance and conceptual art from the 1970s, while exploring an expanded social and psychological landscape. Ranging from controlled studio situations to interventions in the flow of everyday life, their work shares an interest in the capacity of singular situations to generate complex meanings. Set against a contemporary mediascape of perpetual distraction, their work provides a tonic reminder of how the meaning of even the most elementary sign is formed through endless connections and links to other signs, and how in navigating these networks of irreducible complexity we may gain a chance to rethink and refresh our readings of the world.
