MiArt, Milan’s International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair, celebrates its tenth anniversary next May. The event will take place from 5 through 8 May 2005 in Pavilion 11 of the Fiera Milano exhibition center, one of the world’s most important trade fair venues.

As a city that hosts numerous high-profile international events and an impressive list of significant public and private initiatives, the capital of the Lombardy region traditionally provides a stage for artistic and cultural experimentation, and is now regarded as the home of contemporary art collecting in Italy.

MiArt is Italy’s most comprehensive exhibition-cum-market and the only one that boasts three separate sections, ranging from the historic avant-garde movements, to the most ground-breaking developments on today’s art scene: the Modern art section (accessible only to exhibitors presenting works and artists from the early 20th century to the 1960s); the Contemporary art section (for exhibitors presenting more recent works); and the Anteprima section (featuring galleries launching artists under 35 years of age).

A fourth cross-over section called Art & Co., focuses on exhibitors specializing in modern and contemporary art that straddles the fine line between art and design. Some of the most notable names in this section include Gio Ponti, Corrado Levi, Giacomo Balla, Ettore Sottsass, Nanda Vigo, and more.

Over 220 exhibitors from more than 9 countries take part in the fair, and next year’s event is expected to attract some 35 thousand visitors.

To celebrate its tenth appearance on the art scene, MiArt has introduced several major changes. A new selection committee has been formed that will be asking exhibitors to forward their plans for approval prior to acceptance.

There is also a new venue – Pavilion 11 – that is accessible through the Porta Metropolitana entrance and represents a superb example of Milan’s industrial archaeology and ensures a top quality display environment for all the galleries in attendance.

One hundred collectors will be offered a preview of the exhibition prior to the official opening.
Throughout the show a packed program of parallel events will take place involving several international institutions. Among them, numerous special projects, seminars and conferences designed to explore the contemporary art scene in its entirety, in conjunction with curators, critics and the artists themselves. Art shows put together specially for the occasion will also be staged both inside the exhibition area and outside it.
