Mudam announces ~self01 by :mentalKLINIK from October 6 to Decembre 11, 2004.

One of the reasons behind the emergence of :mentalKLINIK – an Istanbul based collective made up by Yasemin Baydar and Birol Demir – is to re-evaluate the human-object relationship, to transform it, and to attempt to prove that relationships of consumption can be experienced differently.

During its long process of emergence, :mentalKLiNiK has aimed at re-evaluating the processes of art, design, production, and consumption and to create a code of ethics. Every year it defines a precise theme by surrounding itself with a group of philosophers, researchers, musicians, artisans and graphic artists. Together they develop original products, backed up by a specific scenography to realise an exhibition. Over the last three years the ideas tackled have been Sleep, Game and Copy. For the first time outside Turkey, :mentalKLINIK presents for Mudam the idea of Self.

Taking into consideration the overuse and depletion of the concept of Self, both at the level of the arts and in academic discourses, and also cognizant of the threat posed by the fact that it is easily inflatable, :mentalKLINIK planned a gusty voyage to its centre, at times using byways. Believing the world is a place that makes up and tells stories, it wasn’t hard for :mentalKLINIK to combine the concept of Self with the concept of Voyage.

The exhibition ~self01 functions as an expo vente, suggesting to the public a different approach to art and widen their grasp of contemporary creation. The really quite playful side of such a project can be seen as reflected both in the range of goods available, that say something about our everyday lives, and in the attractive selling price.

~self01 was commissioned by Marie-Claude Beaud, Director of Mudam
