Curators Katia Baudin and Edith Doove

Many contemporary artists investigate the limits between painting and the object, painting and space. The most important starting point for this exhibition is the question how artists look at painting today and how they expand it outside of the canvass.

With this both Katia Baudin and Edith Doove stay loyal to the starting points of their respective institutions. Baudin in Frac Nord-Pas de Calais investigates the limits between art and design, public and private space. Doove at MDD questions the museum itself en plays with the interaction of the private collection and temporary shows as well as inside and outside.
‘Across the border’ shows a large selection of recent acquisitions of the Frac Nord-Pas de Calais, both art and design, combined with some rarely shown contemporary works from the MDDcollection, amongst which a recent donation by Marcel Maeyer. On this occasion Nicolas Floc’h made a new ‘Camouflage’ installation for MDD.

With work from Polly Apfelbaum, Cecile Bart, Michel Blazy, Olga Boldyreff, Stephane Calais, Nicolas Floc’h, Liam Gillick, Zaha Hadid, Charles Kaisin, Philippe Parreno, Bruno Peinado, Radi Designers, Maarten Van Severen, Cosima Von Bonin, Andrea Zittel, Filip Francis, Marcel Maeyer, Perry Roberts, David Tremlett and Marthe Wery.
Dialogue
In direct dialogue with this exhibition Belgian artist Pieter Vermeersch has been invited to realise two impressive installations that investigate the limits of painting and space. ’0-100%black’ is a large mural painting which connects the interior and exterior of the museum by being painted on both sides of one wall. ‘Average colours’ introduces the modern collection into this exhibition by making an abstraction of it as Vermeersch takes the average colour of each painting and makes a new installation with it.
Meeting
On saturday 5 June artists and curators meet with the public to talk about the show and their work. Please contact MDD for further information.
