A programme of visual arts, performance, public dialogue, workshops, and film.

Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art Cairo, Egypt

While photography in Egypt has historically had little support as compared to more traditional arts mediums, signs of a budding photographic movement in Egypt exist in abundance. In a significant paradigm shift without precedent, young artists today are using the camera in novel ways-as a mode for active participation, intervention and an alternative to hegemonic visual constructions.

PhotoCairo in its second year aims to build upon an evident interest in the photographic medium in Egypt and consolidate it, providing a first class venue for exhibitions and creating a space for critical discussion as to the myriad uses of the reproducible image today-from classic documentary work to installation or video. By all means, PhotoCairo is unprecedented in scope, both in the context of Egypt, and the region. PhotoCairo promises to be the only annual photography event in the region that combines exhibitions with a programme of panels, presentations, workshops and film/video.
