Art Basel

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Agreeably warm temperatures, longer days and all the glories of nature are unmistakable signs that summer and with it the next Art Basel  will soon be here. This year the show is ideally timed from June 13 to 18, 2001 the week after the opening of the Venice Biennale.

The Vernissage for invited guests and the media is on June 12.

Art 32 Basel promises to be the most high-calibre event in Art Basels history. “Never before have so many of the worlds best galleries and artists been represented at an art event”, says Samuel Keller, Director of Art Basel, in connection with the continued rise in the quality of this international art fair.

The new, 700-page catalogue prepared in cooperation with the renowned Hatje Cantz publishing house came out just a few days ago. This provides a richly illustrated preview of Art Basel and a comprehensive overview of all that the international art market has to offer. All those wishing to receive it a few weeks ahead of the show may place their order directly with the publishers Hatje Cantz. Just telephone (from Europe)  49 711 44 05 220 or (from the USA) 800 581 4839.

An atmosphere of heightened expectation also surrounds Art Unlimited in Hall 1 of the Messe Basel a new platform which made its debut last year. Art Unlimited features outsize artistic projects that cannot be seen or purchased at any other art fair. Of the 192 projects submitted for Art 32 Basel, the Art Committee has selected the 67 most interesting ones. It is gratifying to note that the list not only includes leading artists such as Ilya Kabakov, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra, James Turrell and Jeff Wall and sought-after young artists such as Pipilotti Rist, Ugo Rondinone, Atelier van Lieshout and Vanessa Beecroft, but also many artists representing the very youngest generation.

Everything has been done to make this summer a truly unforgettable art season. The “Family get-together of the art world” is scheduled for Art Basel from June 13 to 18, 2001.
