The National Council for Culture and Arts (CNCA), through its Department of International Affairs and the Macro Area of Visual Arts, opens the call for curatorial projects to represent Chile at the 57th Venice Biennale.

The call is open to curators from Chile or any Latin American country with a strong curatorial background. The chosen curator will be responsible for the development of the project that will be exhibited in the Chilean Pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennale which will be held between May to November 2017.

Proposals should consider implementation of an exhibition space covering an area of approximately 160 square meters in the grounds of Artigliere dell'Arsenale, one of the main venues of the Biennale.

The contestants are invited to submit draft proposals before June 17, 2016 via email. This must include a curatorial statement written in no more than 10,000 words describing the following:
1) Contextual framework: definition, development objectives and theoretical framework of the proposal.
2) Space: description of how the exhibition space of the Chile Pavilion will be addressed.
3) Artist(s): demonstrate trajectory and relevance of the proposed artist(s) within the Chilean and international art scene.

Submitted proposals will be assessed by a panel, appointed and chaired by The National Council of Arts and Culture of Chile. If the proposal is selected within seven shortlisted projects, curators will have to submit a more detailed proposal in PDF format of up to 15 pages via email.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to pitch their project and discuss it in more detail during an interview with the selection committee to clarify any information submitted as required.

If proposals presented by Latin American curators living outside of Chile are shortlisted, they should assign a representative in Chile, and this person must be present the day of the pitch.

The members of the jury are:

Cuachtémoc Medina, Mexican theorist and curator, Chief Curator MUAC (Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo-UNAM)
Ivo Mesquita, Brazilian curator and art critic, Curator of the 28th São Paulo Biennale and Manifesta 9
