The visual arts programme Who if not we …? consists of seven new exhibitions and a number of additional projects throughout Europe and has been developed as part of Thinking Forward, a cultural programme organized on the occasion of the Dutch presidency of the EU. The main motivation of Who if not we …? is to discuss how art can participate in current social and political change.

A SERIES OF TALKS
At the Stedelijk Museum CS in Amsterdam, a series of talks with leading artists, theorists and curators from Central and Eastern Europe takes place 22-23 October 2004. Themes include: the ‘blind spot’ in Western art historiography; changes in the meaning and function of ideologically charged ‘immortal buildings’; and the ‘hero factor’ – who might be the new ‘heroes’ of our times?

Going East is organized by Archis, a magazine on architecture, city and visual culture, in collaboration with AMO, Rotterdam. It focuses on issues such as European borders, migration, citizenship and cultural and national identity. www.archis.org

Who if not we…? is part of Thinking Forward and is developed by Maria Hlavajova, curator of the visual arts programme of Thinking Forward. Thinking Forward consists of a variety of cultural activities in the Netherlands as well in the ten new member states of the EU. The programme is an initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and is commissioned by the Fund for Amateur Art and Performing Arts and the Mondriaan Foundation.
