Storefront for Art and Architecture is offering a one-year fully funded fellowship position to an individual interested in the research and development of a global project related to architecture, design, and technology. The Program and Strategy Fellow will primarily support Architecture Conflicts, a high priority project being developed by Storefront. The project seeks to expose conflicts worldwide by scale and topic, to identify individuals and collectives around the world working on responses to conflict, and to understand the scope, influence, and agency of potential solutions grounded in design and architecture. The project will culminate in the creation of a global network as part of the launch of the World Wide Storefront, a new platform and biennial event.
Through Architecture Conflicts, the Fellow will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of program development, including curation, communications, development, partnership-building, event organization, and more. The position will support and receive mentorship from Storefront’s curatorial team (under its Director & Chief Curator and Associate Curator), as well as from its administrative and strategic development staff (under its Director of Strategic Development). The position will report directly to the Chief Curator, but will interact with all Storefront staff members on a daily basis in the development and promotion of the project.
This position is intended to support researchers, aspiring curators, and arts administrative professionals from underrepresented backgrounds. Storefront seeks a standout candidate who has had minimal access to opportunities that have allowed for agency over a major project. The position provides intellectual development and project expertise, while simultaneously furthering an understanding of the landscape of cultural production in New York City and globally.
Skills and qualifications
–Master’s Degree in Architecture, Design, Planning, or affiliated fields
–Proven record of excellence in research and curatorial methods
–Outstanding written communication skills in English, including drafting original content, editing, and proofreading in English; proficiency in at least another language is strongly preferred
–Experience with project-based grant-writing and communications related tasks
–Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups
–Strong organizational and time-management skills with impeccable attention to detail
–High energy, creative thinking, and team-player attitude
–Proficient with database software, web and social media channels (preferred)
–Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
–Knowledge of, or interest in learning programming and web management systems
–Comfort working in a fast-paced environment that requires the ability to multi-task
–Desire to learn, improve skills/understanding of the field, and further Storefront’s mission and project goals
Curation and research: With Chief Curator, develop methodology and project/research design. Lead research process with support from curatorial staff and interns. Develop relationships with key scholars, thought-leaders, architects, and designers working on issues of conflict worldwide. Identify strategic research and content-based partnerships. Design competition briefs and develop related resources.
Project management: Oversee calendar, budget, timelines, and deliverables for overall project. Ensure goals are consistently met. Plan and execute digital platforms and programs at New York gallery space and potentially international sites associated with the project. Produce events with Gallery Manager & Project Coordinator, including logistics, installation, media, and post-production efforts. Coordinate the production of print collateral and affiliated materials.
Development: Seek opportunities for partnerships and relationships that would support the project. Work with Director of Strategic Development to assess and deliver key funding priorities for the project. Assist in grant-writing, cultivation, and special event efforts related to the project.
Communications: With Director of Strategic Development and Development & Outreach Associate, coordinate outreach language and strategy for communicating the project. Develop and edit curatorial and outreach texts. Create media relations campaign and social media strategy. Oversee documentation of all efforts associated with the project. Attend and represent Storefront and the project at public and private events and appearances.
This position is a full-time, grant-funded role, with a fixed term of one year. It may be extended after the initial grant period. The fellowship is based out of Storefront’s offices at 611 Broadway, New York. Some travel may be required.
