“And now?”… And now… “Visual Arts in Greece III”, organized by the State Museum of Contemporary Art for the third consecutive year, between 17 December 2008 and 22 February 2009. More than 100 works of art by 45 artists, under the general title of this year’s central exhibition “And now?” (curator: Christina Petrinou) will be exhibited in the halls of the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki/ Greece. The works to be exhibited are drawn from relevant exhibitions in museums, galleries and other art venues over the past year, from September 2007 to August 2008, covering the entire visual arts spectrum.

“Three years of experience mark this year’s ‘Visual Arts in Greece 2008′ exhibition”, mentions the director of the S.M.C.T., Ms Maria Tsantsanoglou, who explains: “By registering the country’s visual arts events and using a comprehensive search engine, the database of the State Museum of Contemporary Art ( www.visualarts.gr) offers information regarding exhibitions since 2005 and proves its archival value and popularity with more than 60,000 visitors in 2008. This way, we are able to cover a substantial gap in the availability of information regarding the Hellenic visual arts production. This year’s central event is the exhibition titled ‘And now?’ and investigates whether, and to what degree, contemporary and today’s art in Greece can also shape a dynamic visual art scene, or remain secluded and distant without offering any valuable contribution to the international visual arts speculation”.

According to the art historian and curator of the Visual Arts exhibition, Christina Petrinou, the rationale behind this exhibition “is to explore the status of Greek and foreign contemporary art in Greece through the selection of works. The exhibition’s title investigates whether there exists and to what degree, an administrative framework for contemporary Greek art and an audience which answers to contemporary art”.
