SculptureCenter is pleased to present one art by internationally renowned artist Anya Gallaccio, commissioned through SculptureCenters Artist-in-Residence program. Gallaccio, who lives and works in London, is well known in the United Kingdom for her site-specific work with temporal materials. one art will be in the artists first solo exhibition in an American museum.For one art, Gallaccio fells and disassembles a fifty-foot weeping cherry tree and reconstructs it in SculptureCenters main space, leaving visible all of the necessary hardware. The tree, killed when contractors erroneously cut its root system, fills the space with an entangled web of branches and cables. The title of the work is borrowed from an Elizabeth Bishop poem whose subject is love and loss and the unlikely possibility that we might master it through artful practice. one art is a tree as assisted ready-made, building on the history of sculpture as a dialogue between mass and gravity.
Anya Gallaccio will discuss her commissioned work for SculptureCenter, as well as past projects on January 10, 7pm.

About SculptureCenter
Founded by artists in 1928, SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution dedicated to experimental and innovative developments in contemporary sculpture. SculptureCenter commissions new work and presents exhibits by emerging and established, national and international artists. In 2001, SculptureCenter purchased a former trolley repair shop in Long Island City, Queens. This facility, designed by artist/designer Maya Lin, includes 6,000 square feet of interior exhibition space, offices, and outdoor exhibition space.
