Badlands Unlimited is pleased to announce its participation at the 2010 NY Art Book Fair. Founded in 2010, Badlands Unlimited publishes ebooks, paper books, and artist works in digital and print forms. Historical distinctions between books, files, and artworks are dissolving rapidly. Badlands Unlimited publishes and produces new works that embody the spirit of this emerging dissolution.

At the Art Book Fair, Badlands will premiere three publications and present a reading and book signing by Paul Chan. A sculptural installation has also been conceived in collaboration with artist Cassie Raihl. Resembling a makeshift post-apocalyptic lo-tech shelter that doubles as a modular display unit, the table-top construction functions as a hub for visitors to explore new titles and artist works—each presented on a variety of reading platforms, ranging from e-readers to traditional paper formats.

Published as a limited paperback and an unlimited ebook, Paul Chan’s Phaedrus Pron recasts Plato’s legendary dialogue on art, erotic love, and madness as unyielding sexual prose that stretches the limits of intelligibility and sense.

Chan will read from Phaedrus Pron and discuss Plato’s relationship to art and erotic love.

NEW BOOKS FROM BADLANDS

Phaedrus Pron
By Paul Chan

“Socrates loves philosophy but is mad about Phaedrus. So he seduces the young and handsome man under a tree with the words that matter most.”
—back cover of Phaedrus Pron

“Written” by typesetting the original text with computer fonts created by Chan that transform the conventional alphabet into an array of erotic idiolects, Phaedrus Pron unfolds as a relentless exchange of erotic verse between a philosopher and a young man in search of rhyme and reason.

The essential and incomplete Sade for Sade’s sake
By Paul Chan

This artist book, designed by Chan, brings together for the first time drawings, writings, and fonts he created for Sade for Sade’s sake, his project that premiered at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Using the work of the philosopher and pornographer Marquis de Sade (1740–1814) as a departure point, Sade for Sade’s sake is a five-hour-and-forty-five-minute video projection as well as a constellation of other works that together evoke the spirit of Sade’s radical critique of freedom and reason for the 21st century.

Waiting for Godot in New Orleans: A Field Guide (ebook edition)
Edited by Paul Chan
(ebook co-published by Creative Time and Badlands Unlimited, hardcover book published by Creative Time)

The final installment of Creative Time’s multi-part Waiting for Godot in New Orleans by Paul Chan, A Field Guide brings together a rich collection of primary ephemera, photographs, articles, and essays that explore the project’s unique process from conception to completion. Divided into eight sections (Remember, Picture, Relate, Organize, Appear, Play, Film, Reflect), the book centers around the production of Samuel Beckett’s classic play over two weekends in two New Orleans neighborhoods—the middle of an intersection in the Lower Ninth Ward, and the front yard of an abandoned house in Gentilly. The production re-imagines the post-Katrina landscape of New Orleans as the setting for the 20th century’s most emblematic story of waiting, and in doing so, illuminates the personal and political conditions facing the people of New Orleans and evacuees in surrounding cities.
