Whitney Museum at Altrias Breakout Sessions reflect the diverse ways in which contemporary artists engage and present visual culture. As a departure from conventional formats, Breakout Sessions invite artists to present work, performances, and ideas that comprise the constellation of influences informing their overall creative practice. Promoting an open studio format, the program provides rare access to artists visual inspirations ranging from works of fellow artists to interdisciplinary elements of pop culture.

Past Breakout Sessions programs include the screening/performance series Repeat Redux; book launch for Lovely Daze; presentation by Vito Acconci; lecture series/publication with Adam Putnam; performance/limited-edition vinyl record release by Los Super Elegantes; and talk/collaborative publication by artist Alex Hubbard.

Admission is FREE. Please visit the Calendar of Events www.whitney.org for further details and schedule updates.

WINTER 2007 PROGRAM

January 17, 9 AM-5 PM DANCING NINE TO FIVE &
Fritz Haeg: EDIBLE ESTATES, SUNDOWN SCHOOLHOUSE AND THE HOMOSEXUAL HOME
Dance Project and Lecture

What happens when graceful, vital bodies introduce new ways of moving into a space where people are perhaps least aware of their bodies? Fritz Haeg transplants his Los Angeles based Sundown Schoolhouse, a geodesic home and educational environment with an activist mission, to the Whitney at Altrias Sculpture Court. The public space will become an active site for day-long dance workshops during which local dancers offer movement workshops and drop-in clinics to Midtown workers, tourists, and passersby ending with a lecture and video screening by Haeg at 7 PM.

Admission is free, but registration is required. Please visit www.dancing9to5.org for a complete schedule and full list of instructors. Email public_programs@whitney.org or call 212-570-7715 to reserve a dance session.
Presented in conjunction with Architecture Dialogues.

February 20, 6 PM Glenn Kaino: Burning Boards
Performance and Installation

Conceptual artist and sculptor Glenn Kaino presents an installation and chess tournament performance involving candle-lit wax pieces in the Whitney at Altria Sculpture Court. Drawing on the speed, pressure, and logic of chess to critique social structures and systems of validation, the sculptural installation which includes the remnant chess pieces will remain on display. The tournament will feature ranked professional chess players, artists, writers, and musicians selected by Kaino.

March 12-22 PRAXIS STUDIO: DREAMS AND POSSIBILITIES
Film Project and Installation

Praxis Studio (Delia Bajo and Brainard Carey) presents Dreams and Possibilities in the Sculpture Court of the Whitney at Altria. Working with an extended team, the husband-and-wife art collaborative transforms the Whitney at Altria into a dreamy landscape. As viewers enter the environment, they become cast members of a participatory feature film in the making. Using a hybrid process they call Metalobe, Praxis blends web technology and traditional film industry techniques to establish a new form of filmmaking with user-generated content. Enter online at www.twobodies.com/metalobe

On view Monday-Saturday 7:30 AM-9:30 PM, Sunday 11 AM-7 PM
Presented in conjunction with Whitney Lives Performance on 42nd.
