The Gallerist Programme in General:
In October 2012, de Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery (gb agency, Paris; Hollybush Gardens, London; Jan Mot, Brussels; Raster, Warsaw) will launch the new professional development programme the Gallerist Programme. The Gallerist Programme sits alongside the Curatorial Programme as part of de Appel’s activities in Education and Development and connects to the Fair Gallery’s initiative to examine and create new forms of collaboration between galleries in an increasingly expanded field of operation.
The Gallerist Programme is the first practical training program for art professionals in the commercial segment of the art world, challenging participants to hone their knowledge and skills. Although several universities already offer courses in ‘business administration for the arts’ and curricula around the art market, the Gallerist Programme approaches the art market through a ‘Learning by doing’ principle, comparable to the principles that underline the Curatorial Programme. A package of lessons in theory and history are linked to case studies, practical and informal meetings, and will eventually be rolled into a final assignment in the real playing field of an art fair. De Appel arts centre and The Fair Gallery believe in the value and significance created by bringing together participants not only from diverse backgrounds, but also with different frames of reference in their business approach or art (historical) knowledge.
The curriculum of the Gallerist Programme takes into account the critical balance between the artistic and business goals that the gallery owner faces in today’s global market. The curriculum of the Gallerist program pays attention to many curatorial approaches in the ‘white cube.’ Drawing upon examples of exceptional gallery exhibitions from past to present, attention is given to the nature of the relationships between artists, collectors, art fairs and institutions. Focusing on notions of both success and failure, artistic, curatorial and business perspectives are discussed, while also paying attention to the administrative and practical aspects of the profession which are the backbone of a gallery’s operations.
The annual Gallerist Programme will bring together ten participants and is structured around six to eight sessions spread over nine months and takes place at various locations worldwide. The program will highlight and pay attention to new developments and shifts within the art world and the works themselves. It is therefore specific in giving attention to and recruiting participants from the geographical contexts of the emerging markets, and beyond. The curriculum will be composed in order to accommodate also young gallery owners, who have only just started running their business, and allow them to build upon what they might have already learned and or experienced. On the other hand, the program is also open to art professionals who are not in the commercial sector of this industry yet, but want to gain insight and focus before commencing their own business.
The Gallerist Programme is mainly organized on location and in line with major art events such as de Rijksakademie Open Studio’s, fairs and gallery weekends of established (The Armory Show, Basel Miami Beach, FIAC, Frieze) to more experimentally driven affairs (Artissima, ABC Berlin), and non-Western (Sao Paolo, Hong Kong) art gatherings. The meetings play out over a minimum of five days or maximum ten days. The various environments and situations of the locations provides a context for the content of the seminars and their material.
Liste Young Art Fair is an important partner of the Gallerist Programme. Liste is the leading international art fair for young gallery owners, and takes place annually alongside ARTBasel. Liste provides participants with a stand for their final project and a showcase to display what knowledge they have acquired through the span of the course. It also offers participants a unique opportunity to debut themselves and their business at the epicenter of their professional field.
The Gallerist Programme 2012/ 2013, inaugural year:
In the first year of its existence the Gallerist Programme will consist of 6 intensive workshop weeks, two assignments to be fulfilled from the participant’s home base, regular personal coaching sessions from afar, and cumulates ultimately in the final project, a special presentation at Liste Young Art Fair 2013.
The programme takes a parcour through Amsterdam, London, New York, Berlin, Warsaw and Hong Kong, connecting to events as Frieze Art Fair, Rijksakademie Open Studios, The Armory Show, ABC Gallery weekend and Hong Kong International, as well as the many satellite fairs.
The 4 major excursions will all take place under guidance of a mentor figure, who gives shape to various individual and collective assignments in relation to the specific events. These visits also contain informal encounters with museum directors, collectors and artists, thematized workshops and exhibition visits.
