“Civica 1989-2009. Celebration, Institution, Critique” is a history of an Italian art institution, the Galleria Civica d’Arte Contemporanea di Trento, which was inaugurated in the city of Trento in the fall of 1989.
Conceived of as a narrative celebration, a critical analysis and beginning to a new mode of planning, this exhibition aims to reconstruct the Galleria Civica Trento’s twenty-year history. In so doing, the show will retrace the problematics and potentiality of Italian art and its current institutional systems. “What kind of institution is the Civic Gallery Trento? How has it represented Italian art over the last twenty years? What alternatives, or hypotheses are available to a cultural institution such as this one, which is not a museum, within the system of Italian and international art?” They are questions of an historical-aesthetic, social, political, economic and “systemic” order that will be presented as a literal account structured in various chapters featuring various personages, in which public history, that of shows and catalogues, will leave space to archives, didactic activities, to correspondences and works in progress.
Documenting the multitude of the Galleria Civica’s projects in the last twenty years, “Civica 1989-2009″ represents a comprehensive profiling of one of Italy’s most active institutions dedicated to contemporary art. In its dynamic oscillation between museum space and experimental center, the Galleria Civica has consistently connected its program with developments in contemporary art, helping to maintain the debate and research on the role of Italian art institutions.
Exhibitions, public interventions, seminars, film screenings, performances, editorials and multimedia projects will be realized in collaboration with other cultural institutions from the city of Trento during the exhibit’s three-part expository process. The events include a large historical retrospective, a series of projects diffused throughout the city as well as a series of individual exhibitions. The historical retrospective will be spread amongst the city of Trento in various places as the Diocesano Tridentino Museum, the medieval Castello del Buonconsiglio, the Auditorium Theatre and the Fondazione Galleria Civica headquarters. This section of the show will revisit the institution’s history, reintroducing works, thematic couplings and artistic practices that have characterized the organization’s programming. On-site projects will be dedicated to Italian artists who emerged during the 1980s and 90s. These projects – realized in collaboration with various faculties from the University of Trento, the Bruno Kessler Foundation, the Tridentino Museum of Natural Science and the Fondazione Museo Storico of Trentino – will create in their reciprocal autonomy an open and multiform scenario (from university lectures, workshops and the research project to public intervention and artist books) that will allow a possible framing of Italian art’s recent history. In accordance with the logic of a research space, the solo exhibitions scheduled to rotate through the Fondazione’s basement space will be dedicated to Italian emerging artists. Against the backdrop of the contemporary Italian art scene, the young artists involved are united by their common interest in video and filmic experimentation, the adoption of common practices based on research and the constant reference to archival materials. Together, they seek a redefinition of the narrative and performative practices as a possible means to shape memory, both personal and collective—questions equally pertinent in the definition of the new Fondazione’s identity.
In its total articulation “Civica 1989-2009″ displays the multifaceted relationship that has linked the development of the institutional sector and artistic practices in Italy, while identifying possible approaches—display, documentation, production and reflection—the new Fondazione might employ in the future. Weaving retrospective and prospective, the project coincides with the beginning of the Fondazione Galleria Civica’s activities, in which the characteristics of the museum—historically dominant in Italy—will be united with the more agile and mobile qualities of a “research center.” Based upon the model of university research institutes, it will remain rooted in its context—the city of Trento—by way of a diffuse and interdisciplinary methodology in line with international tendencies. If “Civica 1989-2009″ looks toward the past—in this case, the history of the Galleria Civica and the origins of contemporary Italian art—it is only in order to act upon the social and cultural setting of the present while defining a possible profile for the “museum of the future”. The inauguration will be followed by a launch party for the first edition of the Fondazione’s new “house organ,” PROGRAMMA, a review-book co-edited with Kaleidoscope magazine (Milan), divided in two parts: “The Real,” which documents the exhibition, and “The Hypothetical,” an expression of the museum as “hypothetical” platform, as prospective, project, research, atelier, laboratory and expression of a dense and fluid institutional narrative that is constantly “in progress.”
