The Alps, mountains in general, geology, snow, natural forces, climate change, tourism, the sublime and the view from above into the distance have always inspired art and architecture. Thus, art has shaped our view of the Alps, whereby art and sciences went hand in hand for a long time when discovering the Alps. Hence, the participants of the second Engadin Art Talks will talk about their involvement on the subject of “MAPPING THE ALPS” from different perspectives with many different backgrounds.

Together with renowned artists, architects and scientists like Andrea Deplazes, Sarah Morris, Lawrence Weiner and Peter Zumthor this year’s symposium takes place on August 27 and 28 in the Halle am Plazzet in Zuoz, Switzerland. The panels will be led by Hans Ulrich Obrist, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery London, and Beatrix Ruf, director of the Kunsthalle Zurich.

Peter Zumthor, internationally known architect and creator of unique places like Therme Vals, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Kolumba. Art museum of Archdiocese of Cologne, talks with the art historian Philip Ursprung about his work, also in the context of “MAPPING THE ALPS”.

Nairy Baghramian, who examines modernist architecture and design in her artistic practice; Jan von Brevern, who researches the geographic representation of the Alps in architecture, photography and art-theory in the 19th Century; the architect Andrea Deplazes, who designed the spectacular new Monte Rosa SAC-hut; the artist Hamish Fulton, who crosses different landscapes for his art; Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, who creates suggestive installation on various geographic spaces; the architect Nikolaus Hirsch, who investigates institutional spaces; Sarah Morris, who explores mainly urban architecture in her films and paintings; Gianni Pettena, who creates experimental architecture and works towards an expanded notion of architecture; Walid Raad, whose artistic practice focuses on Lebanese history; the two filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam, who create a cartography of Tibet in their films; Kai Schlenther, who runs an architectural office in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; the conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner, who repeatedly focused on the Engadin in his work and whose sentence STARS DON’T STAND STILL IN THE SKY FOR ANYBODY looks at the alpine sky at night. All of them will offer surprising insights and inspiring exchanges during E.A.T.

The Engadin Art Talks / E.A.T. was initiated by Cristina Bechtler in 2010 and takes place once a year. In 2012 the topic will be “NON-REALIZED PROJECTS” in the Alpine region.

The symposium is integrated into the context of the SAMposium of St. Moritz Art Masters 2011 (26.8.–4.9.2011). Conception and organization are the responsibility of Cristina Bechtler, Hans Ulrich Obrist und Beatrix Ruf.
