Co-sponsored by Merrill Lynch and coinciding with The Armory Show

Coinciding with The Armory Show contemporary art fair, the Amigos de ARCO Association has organized a program of cultural activities in the Cervantes Institute of New York from 8 to 10 March, called En Español. An arts festival. Subtitled El español como un lenguaje global, the event will showcase the diversity and wealth of various expressions of Spanish and Latin American creation such as film, video and audio poetry. The festival is co-sponsored by the Merrill Lynch financial management company.

The festival will heighten the profile of the ARCO brand in the USA while also facilitating international contacts. This is yet another step forward in the close collaboration in recent years between ARCO and The Armory Show, with the organization of conferences and forums around the world.

The three-day festival is divided into three sections and will offer the public an overview of Spanish and Latin American culture in eleven different sessions. Each one of the different activities will be introduced by a leading expert in the field, with a brief theoretical background on the genre presented and its development in the Spanish-speaking world. The festival will be attended by Rosina Gómez-Baeza, director of ARCO (International Contemporary Art Fair), together with other leading names in culture and art.
Film
The first of the three sections of the festival is dedicated to film, with a selection of films chosen by the curator Miguel Marías, who will also be introducing each sessions. Marías chose four Spanish and one Argentinean films for the event: El sol del membrillo (Víctor Erice, 1991), Jardines colgantes (Pablo Llorca, 1993), En construcción (José Luis Guerín, 2001), El cielo gira (Mercedes Álvarez, 2004) and La memoria del agua (Héctor Faver, 1994). These feature-length films will be screened on 8, 9 & 10 March between 11 am and 1:30 pm, as well as two afternoon sessions on Wednesday 8 at 1:15 pm and Friday 10 at the same time.
Video
The second section is centered on video art, with the projection of a series of works grouped together under the title Las ciudades continuas. The works have been selected by Berta Sichel and Cristina Cámara, director and coordinator, respectively, at the Audiovisual Department in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. The videos will be screened on 8, 9 & 10 March between 1:45 and 3 pm in the auditorium at the Cervantes Institute of New York. The works selected are by some of the most widely recognized Spanish and Latin American video artists of the moment: Gonzalo Lebrija, Daniel Silvo, Txuspo Poyo, Julieta Hanono, Álvaro Negro, Terence Gower, Sergio Belinchón, Aarón Fernández, Alejandro Campoy, Isabel María, Melanie Smith, Francis Naranjo and David Lamelas.
Audio Poetry
The festival is rounded off with a section on audio poetry, reproducing the poetry recital Jardín de Versos recorded in the garden of the Cervantes Institute of New York. Ana Santos Payán and Pedro J. Miguel from Salamandria and El Gaviero publishers will present this session on Thursday 9 March at 3:15 pm. The project features the voices of ten poets representing various Hispanic cultural areas with the order of audition underscoring this rich diversity. The poets are Estíbaliz Espinosa, Juan Carlos Mestre, Amalia Bautista, Jorge Valdés Díaz-Vélez, Elena Medel, Kepa Murua, Julia Barella, Andrés Neuman, Ana Gorría and Juan Antonio González Iglesias.
