In 2010, the leitmotif of our exhibitions is architecture and space. In the center of attention are the installations and films by Andreas Fogarasi, the garden projects and the re-design of our museum garden by atelier le balto and the architecture of a new generation from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. The year will be concluded with a project by Pawel Althamer, who is awarded the Aachen Art Prize of 2010.

From April 20 – 25, the Ludwig Forum will be present at the Art Cologne
Rheinland Lounge. Please come and meet us there!

Andreas Fogarasi “1998″ until April 25, 2010

In the exhibition project “1998″, the Austrian artist Andreas Fogarasi deals with processes that shape our perception and behaviour but in their omnipresence often remain unnoticed in daily life. The aesthetical and economical transformation of public spaces and the construction of history are part of this. Fogarasi reveals its visible symptoms and translates them in highly aesthetical works. For the exhibition, he has produced a video about an open-air museum in Norway that also presents contemporary buildings and spaces in a museum-like way, such as for example the apartment of Pakistani immigrants. Another new work is the installation of ten marble plates showing a series of architecture photographs and thus being display, sculptural object and architectural device at the same time. Parallel to the exhibition, the Ludwig Forum’s movie theatre shows the videos that were produced for the Venice Biennial of 2007. Moreover, Andreas Fogarasi has created a supplement for the magazine “dérive – Zeitschrift für Stadtforschung” that accompanies the exhibition and this edition’s theoretical discourses on reconstruction and deconstruction.

April 24, 2010, 5.00 p.m.: artist talk Andreas Fogarasi with Brigitte Franzen, director Ludwig Forum, in the Rheinland Lounge at the Art Cologne.

atelier le balto “Les pieds sur terre”
Exhibition and garden project

May 9 – September 19, 2010, opening May 9, 12.00

The garden artists of atelier le balto can look back at ten years of work and will present their most important and ground-breaking projects in the exhibition “Les pieds sur terre”.

The architects and landscape designers from Berlin and Le Havre are known for an approach to nature and landscape that is both innovative and conscientious while always involving the public in their planning. Atelier le balto has built up a reputation with garden projects that were realized in the context of art institutions such as the gardens in the atrium of the exhibition space KW in Berlin or the Jardin Sauvage next to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, followed by the garden designs of FRAC Lorraine in Metz, Villa Romana in Florence and the festival Lausanne-Jardins in 2009. Their most recent project is currently being developed for the Ludwig Forum in Aachen. During a time of four years, our garden will be reshaped in order to re-establish aspects of the original garden design and open up the garden’s full potential as an attractive part of the local neighbourhood. A book in French, English and German is published.

West Arch. A new generation in architecture
September 12 – November 14, 2010, opening September 12, 2010, 12.00

In the exhibition West Arch, the Ludwig Forum will gather 25 young, experimental architecture studios from the three countries surrounding the city of Aachen: Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. For young architects, national borders no longer play an important role. In much the same way, the borders between creative disciplines are disappearing or are being re-defined: it has become increasingly common for young architects to collaborate with engineers, artists, graphic designers, urban planners and landscape designers right from the beginning. Those integrative forms of multi-disciplinary cooperation have lead to new and highly diverse creative strategies. West Arch shows a multi-faceted snapshot of a young architectural scene in these three countries and traces its networks and structures. A broad programme of presentations and talks will establish new links and visions. The exhibition is curated by modulorbeat – ambitious urbanists & planners. The participating studios include among others: F-A-R frohn&rojas, 2012 Architecten, OFFICE KGDVS, STAR strategies+architecture, Studio Architects, Nu architecture Studio, NEXT architects, KOMMA4 Architekten.

A magazine accompanies the presentation.

Pawel Althamer
Aachen Art Prize 2010

December 2010

This year’s Aachen Art Prize is awarded to the Polish artist Pawel Althamer. The prize of 10,000 euros is awarded every two years to artists who have given essential and long-lasting impulses to the international art scene. The prize is linked to a solo exhibition in the Ludwig Forum that will take place in December 2010. Pawel Althamer, born in 1967 in Warsaw, connects aspects of a sculptural tradition with elements of installation and sociological reflection. This often leads to on-site projects that integrate different social groups. Familiar situations from everyday life are placed in new contexts in order to create a shift of meaning. His work can be seen as a new form of realism that has evolved during the political transformations taking place during the early 1990s in Poland and other countries of the former Eastern bloc. Previous winners of the Aachen Art Prize are: Aernout Mik (2008), Roman Signer (2006), Andreas Slominski (2004), Tacita Dean (2002), Michael Asher (2000), Richard Tuttle (1998), Katharina Fritsch (1996), Christian Boltanski (1994), On Kawara (1992), Ilya Kabakov (1990), Richard Long (1988), A.R. Penck (1985) and Luciano Fabro (1983).
