Gest: Laboratory of Synthesis #1
edited by Robert Garnett & Andrew Hunt (October 2008)
ISBN 978 1 870699 96 9

Initiated by a series of events and discussions during the exhibition ‘Gest’ — at the Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, the book Gest: Laboratory of Synthesis, includes a range of essays and interviews that brings together philosophers, artists, theorists and critics to discuss new approaches to art writing. It operates in the widening gap between the mainstream art magazine and the academic journal in order to create new conjunctions and productive disjunctions between theory and practice, out of which new voices and new modes of art writing emerge.
Contributors include: Jennifer Allen, Eric Alliez, Devrim Bayar, Dan Fox, Rainer Ganahl, Johnny Golding, Peter Osborne, Anne Pontégnie, Nina Power, Ralph Rugoff, John Russell and Dirk Snauwaert.

Published by Book Works in association with Kingston University London. Printed offset in an edition of 1,500 copies, b/w and colour, 176 pages, with a soft cover. Designed by Sara de Bondt, 215 x 150 mm.

Feature: Reconstruction
by Shezad Dawood (July 2008)
ISBN 978 1 906012 08 3

With a cast that included Chief Crazy Horse, Krishna, a Valkyrie, a bunch of zombies, some fetish boys, a donkey and an albino snake, Shezad Dawood’s film ‘Feature’ effortlessly slips between film genres, playing havoc with the unwritten rules of distinction and boundary. Similarly Feature: Reconstruction is not just simple documentation of a film. Instead a wide range of photographs taken by actors and volunteers, professionals and amateurs, capture action on both sides of the camera. The images are accompanied by footnotes, e-mail exchanges and written and visual contributions by artists Jimmie Durham, Doug Fishbone, David Medalla and writer Sebastian Roach.

Published by Book Works in collaboration with Castlefield Gallery, Manchester and Wysing Arts Centre, Bourn in association with Leeds Met Gallery, Leeds and Eastside Projects, Birmingham. Printed offset in an edition of 1,500, full colour and two colour throughout, 192 pages, with a soft cover. Designed by Åbäke, 247 x 170mm.
