In March frieze takes a walk on the dark side, where sinister science meets morbid Modernity. George Pendle explores the strange web that connected Kenneth Anger, Dr Alfred Kinsey, L Ron Hubbard, Alaister Crowley and the scientist John Whiteside Parsons in mid-20th century Los Angeles. Joerg Heiser looks at the mysterious side of Modernist plain surfaces, from Boullee’s Temple of Death, through to the Minimal art of Tony Smith and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Plus features on Tom Burr, Paul Noble, Florian Pumhoesl and Nigel Cooke.

In the FRONT section, Charles LaBelle samples the cuisine at the Church of Scientology’s LA restaurant, Jennifer Higgie is entranced by Pina Bauxch, Jerome Boyd-Maunsell delves into the origins of science fiction and Dan Fox lends an ear to Minimalist composer Cornelius Cardew.

The extensive BACK section includes reviews of the Whitney’s ‘Into the Light’, Francesca Gabbiani, Joe Brainard, Keith Farquhar and the Tate Britain’s ‘Exposed: The Vicotrian Nude’.

Also included in this issue is ‘Friday Harbor’, a removable cut-out project by Christina Mackie (courtesy of Magnani, London), commissioned specially for frieze.
