Memory Marathon
Friday 12 October 6pm–11pm
Saturday 13 October 12pm–10pm
Sunday 14 October 11am–9pm

Over three days during Frieze Art Fair Week, the Serpentine Gallery presents the Memory Marathon, the seventh in the acclaimed Serpentine Gallery Marathon series. The Memory Marathon will feature presentations from leading artists, writers, film-makers, scientists, architects, musicians and theorists in a continuous, performative programme. The Memory Marathon will also mark the closing weekend of the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, which takes its inspiration from the work of archaeological excavation, as a material unearthing of memory. The three-day festival will investigate the problem of memory; personal and collective histories; war, trauma and forgetting; the failure of witnessing; deception and self-deception; embodied memory; digital storage and the effect electronic preservation has on remembering.

The Memory Marathon begins on Friday 12 October with Tarek Atoui’s La Suite, a five-hour presentation of Tarab and classical Arab music, in which the artist will perform with fourteen internationally-renowned musicians. La Suite is commissioned by the Sharjah Art Foundation and will take place at the Serpentine Gallery.

The Memory Marathon is dedicated to Eric Hobsbawm.

Excerpts from the Memory Marathon will be broadcast live on The Space, www.thespace.org

Exhibition:
Thomas Schütte
Until 18 November

Artist Thomas Schütte showcases key sculptural, photographic and painted portraits. Although the artist has returned to portraiture throughout his career, this is the first exhibition dedicated entirely to these pioneering works. Key pieces from the artist’s most famous series are presented together with new work made especially for the Serpentine.

Final Week:
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012
Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei
Until 14 October

The twelfth in the Gallery’s annual commission series, this year’s Pavilion takes visitors beneath the Serpentine’s lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous Pavilions. Taking an archaeological approach, the architects have created a design that inspires visitors to look beneath the surface of the Park. It is Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s first collaborative built structure in the UK.

The Serpentine Gallery would like to thank the individuals, trusts, foundations and companies whose generosity and foresight enable the Gallery to realise its acclaimed Exhibition, Architecture, Design, Education and Public Programmes.
