Haute Culture: General Idea — A Retrospective, 1969–1994
On Now Until January 1, 2012
Art Gallery of Ontario

Only two weeks remain before this landmark exhibition closes its doors! Haute Culture features more than 300 works spanning twenty-five years, and is an exhibition of unprecedented scale celebrating the groundbreaking work of the seminal Canadian artist group General Idea. This is the first comprehensive retrospective devoted to General Idea.

General Idea was founded in Toronto in 1969 by Felix Partz, Jorge Zontal and AA Bronson. The collective interrogated media culture through now legendary projects like File magazine, as well as paintings, installations, sculptures, mail art, photographs, videos, ephemera, TV programs and even a beauty pageant. The group’s transgressive concepts and provocative imagery challenged social power structures and traditional modes of artistic creation in ever-shifting ways, until Partz and Zontal’s untimely deaths from AIDS-related causes in 1994.

Haute Culture is curated by Frédéric Bonnet and organized by the Art Gallery of Ontario in conjunction with the Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. The exhibition is generously supported by the Volunteers of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Thomas H. Bjarnason & Woodrow A. Wells, and Paul E. Bain & Lisa Spalding. Contemporary programming at the AGO is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
