frieze news:

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jennifer Higgie and Joerg Heiser as the new joint editors of frieze. Jennifer had previously been reviews editor for four years and Joerg frieze’s editor in Berlin. September 2004 will introduce a redesigned frieze with new editorial formats and features.

frieze issue 81 out now:

‘Kilimnik loves old New York, old television programmes (especially The Avengers and Bewitched) and 18th-century genre paintings. She loves eras – the 1960s, the 1890s and the 1780s. She loves Russia, Russian Ballet and the Russian Tea Room. She loves sparkly things such as snow and glitter and chandeliers; loves the shadows in empty drawing-rooms and the twilight haze in the forest.’ – Steven Stern is enchanted by the work of Karen Kilimnik in the March issue of frieze.

Tom Morton interviews Philippe Parreno about his recent exhibition at Kunstverein Munich, the ghosts in his work, collaboration and talking scores with Pierre Boulez.

Also featured: Alex Farquharson on Haluk Akakce, Dominic Eicher on Erik van Leishout, Olivia Plender on Johanna Billing, Dan Fox on Katy Dove and Kirsty Bell on the cunningly passive-aggressive work of Jeppe Hein.

In the front section Joerg Hesier speaks to Roger M. Buergel, newly-appointed director of Documenta 12, Emily Bick rediscovers Madame Yevonde, pioneer of colour photography, Keith Stuart investigates mobile phone cameras and the rise of moblogging, Emily King considers our continued fascination with the Dandy, George Pendle calculates science’s debt to the late Douglas Adams and Jonathan Bell talks to Foreign Office Architects about branding, elitism and their concept of ‘species’.

The reviews section includes: Sigmar Polke, ‘Black Belt’ at the Studio Museum in Harlem, Markus Schinwald, Mark Leckey, ‘The Last Picture Show’ at Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Kalin Lindena and Andreas Gehlen, ‘Breaking God’s Heart at 38 Langham Street, London, Liz Craft, Marjetica Potrc, Matthias Weischer, Kirsten Stoltman and Sterling Ruby, ‘Dream Factory Communism’ at Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt, Olaf Breuning, Matmos, Andrew Lewis, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Anne Chu, ‘Territories’ at Kunst-Werke, Berlin, Jean-Marc Bustamante, Steve Wolfe, Second Biennale of Ceramics in Contemporary Art, Albisola and ‘Below Stairs’ at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
