“TASTE”
This issue of “Texte zur Kunst” is literally a matter of taste. Our decision to again focus on the category of “taste” in terms of art criticism was motivated by the fact that it can today be regarded as a “blind spot” of both criticism and artistic practice. The contributions gathered in this issue depart from the diagnosis that the implications of taste due to the conditions imposed by the “new spirit of capitalism” have radically changed since the classical attempts of philosophical aesthetics to position it as an expression of the bourgeois individual. While taste was once associated with the promise of an autonomous modern subject, it has today become one of the ideological driving forces behind the lifestyle and culture industries, which have tightly dovetailed identity formation and consumption. Yet this by no means implies that taste, as an aesthetic category, is compromised for good. Rather, the attempt must be made to newly formulate its once emancipative dimension and to explicate its all too often unquestioned significance within the social and economic mechanisms of the art field and related visual industries.
