After circulating through the virtual space of the internet, it is nice for content to come back down to the ground and take a physical form in real space. Though this may not be where the real activity takes place—in physical forms and their exchange—the printed page serves as an important commitment to a certain temporal conclusiveness. It may not be how content moves, but it is how content asserts that it exists, even if only temporarily.

In thinking about what a print version of e-flux journal should be—a coffee table magazine, a scholarly periodical, a broadsheet, a set of posters, unbound pages collected in a box, or simply a CD—we realized that perhaps the most interesting and useful approach would be to let our readers determine its form, material, and channels of distribution and use.

We have invited Francesca Grassi and Jeff Ramsey to develop a modular system for a free, do-it-yourself/print-on-demand publication that can be easily produced using the most widely available printing methods common to homes, offices, or local copy shops. The modular print production platform they developed will allow e-flux journal to be printed in a variety of formats to reflect varying scales and means of production. An individual or institution can produce and distribute the journal in the form of a small booklet, a poster, or as wall-sized graphics for public display, in archival quality or as disposable one-offs, as a single copy or in mass-produced quantities.

This first presentation of e-flux journal in Berlin will be a prototype for what a small art space such as The Building can do with this system, using the most rudimentary means. For this occasion, we are also building some tables and chairs designed by Enzo Mari in 1974, best described in his own words: “I thought that if people were encouraged to build a table with their own hands, for example, they would be able to understand the thinking behind it.”

e-flux video rental

(EVR) is an ongoing work by Anton Vidokle and Julieta Aranda, comprising a free video rental, a public screening room, and a film and video archive that is constantly growing. This collection of over 850 works of film and video art has been assembled in collaboration with more than 400 artists, curators and critics.

EVR is a poetic exploration of alternative processes of circulation and distribution, and it is structured to function like a typical video rental store, except that it operates for free. VHS tapes can be watched in the space, or, once a new member fills out a membership form and contract, they can be checked out and viewed at home. Originally presented at a storefront in New York, in 2004, EVR has traveled to art venues in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Seoul, Paris, Istanbul, Canary Islands, Austin, Budapest, Boston, Antwerp, Berlin, Miami, Lyon, Lisbon and Cali.

Every time EVR opens in a new city, local artists, curators and writers are invited to serve as selectors, choosing artists whose work is added to the collection. In addition, a special program of screenings of works from the EVR collection is part of the project.

Upcoming screenings in February:

Thursday, February 19th, 7:30PM
Khiam, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, 2000, 52:00 min
Friday, February 27th, 7:30PM
A screening program by Magdalena Magiera
