A collaboration between a psychoanalyst and a costume curator, The Concise Dictionary of Dress takes place in Blythe House, west London in the working store for the Victoria & Albert Museum’s vast reserve collections of furniture, ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, fashion and fine arts.

An hour long guided tour through the building, The Concise Dictionary of Dress begins as you take the industrial goods lift up to the top floor. A wrought iron staircase leads you out onto the roof towards an exposed cupola containing the first in a sequence of intriguing definitions in a walk-through dictionary of dress.

Re-describing the notion of ‘dress’ in terms of anxiety, wish and desire, The Concise Dictionary of Dress is presented as a series of eleven words and their associated definitions by psychoanalyst Adam Phillips, and accompanying installations designed and assembled by fashion curator Judith Clark. Cast objects, photographs, tableaux of clothing and accessories are arranged amongst the rolling racks and wrapped objects stored at Blythe House.

A further facet of The Concise Dictionary of Dress manifests in an illustrated 128-page book published by Violette Editions in association with Artangel. The publication features text by Adam Phillips and Judith Clark, and specially commissioned photography by Norbert Schoerner and is available from late April 2010.

Tours of Blythe House run every 20 minutes during open hours, Weds – Sun, from 28 April. Places on the tours are strictly limited and tickets must be purchased in advance. Buy tickets online now from See Tickets, or call 0871 231 0847. Click here to read more about the project.

The Concise Dictionary of Dress is commissioned and produced by Artangel in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum.
