After an extended sold-out run of The Rite of Spring (at the Dance Theater Workshop), Julie Atlas Muz presents TREASURE BOX, her second performance as part of the 2004 Whitney Biennial, a unique evening of burlesque performances in which the best of NYC nightlife sparkles, shines and sins. Taking place at the Coral Room, this three-part show is a celebration of unconventional entertainment and smoldering sexuality.
FIRST ACT, 9:00 PM
Hosted by the dark and dangerous Miss Astrid from the VaVaVoom Room, the opening act features the brightest stars of New York’s burlesque stage performing their signature numbers: Martini Time by the World Famous *BOB*, Angel by the Wau Wau Sisters, Muz performing her famed Damsel in Distress and a special repeat performance of Fifth Degree Smile, an excerpt from Muz’s 2001 show Love, Guts, cha cha cha.
SECOND ACT, 10:30 PM
Julie Atlas Muz presents original material, from her rarely seen beginnings of burlesque to her pop hits, all performed by Muz and her closest collaborators. This act’s line-up is a concentration of some of Muz’s favorite performances: Dirty Martini performs The All-American Girl, Scotty the Blue Bunny re-enacts The Little Girl from Chernobyl, and Tigger and Muz present The Hand. This act is hosted by the irreverent Serge LaGainswak.
THIRD ACT, 12:00 AM
The last act is a late night show guaranteed to get wild. Anything goes with the untamed antics of Dr. Donut, the Bombshell Girls, Skulla, Miss Saturn, and all the savage wildness of the night. Hosted by Murray Hill, “the hardest working middle-aged man in show business,” this act promises to remind you why you moved to New York City.

DJ Johnny Dynell spins between acts, The Fisherman Quartet plays live between 8-9pm, and Jaiko the Mermaid swims in couturier tails by Muz. Come early, stay out late and be blinded by the glow.

Humorous, bawdy, irreverent, and exotic, Julie Atlas Muz is reviving the tradition of the burlesque, performing her dance numbers in venues throughout New York, including the Va Va Voom Room, the Pyramid Club, the Coral Room, the Slipper Room, Joe’s Pub, and Galapagos. Transgressive comedy delivered by scantily clad voluptuous women, burlesque dates to the mid-nineteenth century, when prevailing attitudes deemed it scandalous for women to appear in anything but the accepted costume of bourgeois respectability. Since 1995, when Muz moved to New York from Detroit, she has been at the center of the burlesque resurgence in New York.

Whether swimming in an aquarium as a mermaid or donning outlandish costumes that she peels off during her performance, Muz infuses her works with an air of the unexpected and daringly original. A contemporary dance choreographer, she has also presented her work at performance art venues such as P.S. 122, Chashama, LaMama, and Dixon Place.
