The Sackler Center for Arts Education at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is pleased to announce Julieta Aranda (b. Mexico City, 1975) and Guy Ben-Ner (b. Ramat Gan, Israel, 1969) will participate in the ELAINE TERNER COOPER EDUCATION FUND CONVERSATIONS WITH CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS series.
Within her multimedia oeuvre, Julieta Aranda has frequently focused on the dissemination of information and the agency of the individual in contemporary society, reinventing existing systems of commerce and circulation as part of an ongoing project to, in her own words, “generate viable propositions for alternative transactions of cultural capital.” On April 10, a multipart installation by Aranda inaugurated Intervals, a new contemporary art series conceived to take place in interstices of the museum’s exhibition spaces or beyond the physical confines of the building. Challenging the perception of time as a linear progression marked by clocks and other systems, Aranda’s works created for the Guggenheim attempt to dismantle these universal conventions in favor of a more individualistic understanding of time.
Newly represented in the Guggenheim Museum collection by the video work Stealing Beauty (2008), Guy Ben-Ner is best known for his seemingly ad hoc but in fact painstakingly constructed ‘home videos’. Whether refashioning literary classics or appropriating the domestic setting of Ikea, the artist positions himself, and his wife and children, in a layered world somewhere between fiction and reality. Often humorous but invariably critically engaged, Ben-Ner’s narratives scrutinize such universal notions as love and marriage, desire and responsibility.
In the spring 2006, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum inaugurated the Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists, a series of lectures by artists reflecting on their work and current issues in the art world. From 2001 to the present, this series has given the public the opportunity to listen and learn as the most innovative international artists working today talk about their creative process. Artists chosen for this series are in various stages of their careers and working in a variety of media. The roster has included Slater Bradley, Tacita Dean, Roni Horn, Christian Marclay, Alexandra Mir, Catherine Opie, Tino Sehgal, and 2008 HUGO BOSS PRIZE winner Emily Jacir, among others.
